About me:

Credentials: M.A., RYT200, RCC #20423

My name is Emily Jane Schmitt. I am a White, queer and cisgendered woman living as an uninvited guest on Vancouver Island, home of the Songhees, Esquimalt, WS’ANEC, and Lekwugen-speaking peoples. I grew up in the prairies, and made Victoria my home in 2014. I am so grateful to share in this land and community.

In my spare time, I teach trauma-sensitive yoga classes to populations who may not find commercial yoga classes accessible. I am a lover of the outdoors. On weekends, you can find me camping, surfing, rock climbing, playing hockey, or snacking. Trying new things (even when I am terrible at them!) is an important part of my life.

So why counselling? I got into counselling work because of an intense desire to hear and help people on an individual level. I have undergone therapy experiences myself, which taught me that while we sometimes hold on to our pain too tightly- we also have incredible capacities to release, to change, and to find our peace. Counselling is a useful way to explore our inner world. It gives us a chance to discover what we are made of, and why we are here.

I completed a M.A. in Counselling Psychology at the University of Victoria in 2022, where I previously finished my Bachelor of Social Work, specializing in child protection. I have completed work placements at Island Sexual Health Society, the Ministry of Children and Family Development, and Beacon Community Services’ adult counselling program. I have been employed in women’s transition house services since 2017, and currently enjoy a role at the BC Cancer Agency. Serving this community is a true joy, and the best investment of my time I have ever made.

Thanks for reading. I am glad to share this place and moment with you.
